About Me

Michelle WelbornI am a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) through the North American Registry of Midwives, a licensed midwife by the state of California and a graduate of the National Midwifery Institute's 3-year midwifery program. I attend homebirths in and around San Francisco, California.

I am amazed and grateful to have found midwifery and I love my job! I feel so passionate about birth that it does not feel like work. I believe that pregnancy and birth are normal physiologic life processes that have the power to transform women and families at the deepest levels. Witnessing this transformation and seeing women realize their power is both a joy and an honor.

Education is perhaps my strongest core value. I offer individualized care, professional advice, information and resources to empower my clients to make autonomous decisions about their pregnancies, births and babies. This model of care (the Midwifery Model of Care) builds confidence in parenting skills.

No matter how many births I attend, I learn something new at each birth and find myself profoundly moved by the strength, love and wisdom I regularly see from women, their partners and babies. I can't imagine doing anything more rewarding than this work!

How Did I Get Here?
Witnessing the births of my sister-in-law’s twins in 2002 changed my life forever and inspired me to leave the corporate world behind to pursue my path to midwifery. I immediately immersed myself in studying all things birth. I sought out local study groups, attended numerous trainings, conferences, and meetings dedicated to birth. By 2003 I was attending births professionally as a Birth and Postpartum Doula and in 2005 I began teaching childbirth education, newborn care and breast feeding classes to expecting parents. Since the birth of the twins I have attended over 300 births and taught classes to dozens of expecting and new parents in the San Francisco Bay Area.

My midwifery and birth training is through the National Midwifery Institute, DONA, Lamaze International, Natural Resources, Elizabeth Davis’ Hearts and Hands Midwifery program and The Farm Midwifery Clinic. Through the apprenticeship model of learning, I trained with three busy local homebirth practices over the course of three and a half years, putting my studies into practice. Additionally, in the summer of 2008 I volunteered as a Midwife in the busy Maternity Ward of the Port Vila Central Hospital in Vanuatu.

I am eternally grateful to the women and families I have served and to the midwives and teachers who have mentored me along my way. Thank you!

Please call or email me to set up an initial consultation.

Warm regards,

Michelle Welborn

Yes, Welborn is my real family name — it must be meant to be — a calling perhaps!
